Genre Research: Horror
The evolution of Horror Films
Horror Films: 1940s
What makes a Horror film?
From the research I've done, there's several conventions that conform to the Horror Genre, such as, silence, good music and sound effects create a mood of paranoia. Also from my audience research, i got feedback such as having a dramatic story line, good intro and good editing. In the 1940s, Horror films were occasionally black and white, with low-key lighting, along with orchestral music playing in the back. Also because of the technology they had in the 40s, they usually had white flickers-faults in the videos- mainly because of the technology they were using in that era. The editing they used, for example, going from one scene to another, they would use designs of zig-zags to move from one scene to another- like a slideshow. |
Horror Films 1990s:
Horror Films Modern Day:
The early 2000s were quiet for the genre as it consisted of mainly remakes of classic horror films. Zombie films like, 'Resident Evil' and '28 days Later' played a massive part in the return of the genre. Torture films like 'Saw' & 'Truth and Dare' have also become very popular because of the massive amount of gore involved.
New Technology has impacted the Horror Genre graciously. |
Word Cloud on Horror
This is a word was created on http://worditout.com/word-cloud/make-a-new-one
This is based on our Media AS Project. We had a genre to pick from, which my group chose Horror.
Process
We simply opened up 'WordItOut' word cloud maker and there was a box where we were able to insert a quantity of words. To get a mass amount of information about horror, I searched the word "horror" and copied information into the creator box and clicked 'generate'. It then produced a word cloud with various designs I could pick from.

The BBFC - Age ratings for your film
The British Board of Film Censors was established in 1912. The BBFC was set up in order to bring a degree of uniformity to those standards. BBFC are in charge of rating films due to things like; violence, sexuality etc. While examining, they focus on:
BBFC can offer many services. The BBFC will work with the director and basically guide them with the things they are and aren't allowed in their films. An example is 'The Human Centipede 2' it was banned in the UK for a long time. Prior to classification, the BBFC required cuts to remove several elements of sexual and sexualised violence, sadistic violence and humiliation, and a child presented in an abusive and violent context making it an 18. Due to that, the only way people were able to watch this film was finding on the internet. However, due to the cuts, it was then allowed in UK later on.
Age Rating of 15
For my final piece, me and my group are aiming for an age rating of 15.
- general context - plot, characters, outline of individual scenes
- timings of key moments, including camera angles, type of shots, on- and off-screen moments
- bad language, sex and drug references and so on
